God damnit Japan why don't you make more movies like this?

Dinkin Flicka - 2009-06-11

There is no need to limit this question to Japan.

manfred - 2009-06-11

LOL JAPAN IS SO CRAZY THEY LIKE PANTIES

Stop talking about Japan. It's old.

Evilhead - 2009-06-11

Luckily, there are plenty of other great samurai flicks from the era. Criterion has released the best 60's Japanese movies on DVD with great transfers and sound. Check out Sword of the Beast, Kill!, Throne of Blood, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Hidden Fortress, and many others.

Still, Sword of Doom is one of my all time favorites. Insane body count. Definitely worth watching!

Keefu - 2009-06-11

There are still some samurai flicks coming out. Twillight Samurai is a good one that came out not too long ago. There's that Zatochi remake as well. They just don't come out in such volume anymore, like Westerns.

glasseye - 2009-06-11

Damn.

chumbucket - 2009-06-11

he delivers

baleen - 2009-06-11

There just aren't many samurai movies that are this great.
So I've been getting into a lot of kwaidan lately.

Keefu - 2009-06-11

I've watched the actual movie, Kwaidan, which was great but I haven't seen much else in j-horror.

baleen - 2009-06-11

Not really into the really gory stuff. J-horror implies that, kwaidan more the traditional, darkly ambient folktale tradition which the movie Kwaidan embodies perfectly. There are TONS of them, and some of them are breathtakingly beautiful and practically unknown outside of Japan.

ASubmarineSandwich - 2009-06-11

Baleen, could you recommend a short viewing list?

memedumpster - 2009-06-11

I think the implied kidney incisions were horrifying enough.

I too would love a list of your suggestions for more of this.

Keefu - 2009-06-12

Yeah, that was a poor choice of words on my part. I've got Onibaba sitting around which I've been meaning to watch but I don't have much else experience in that genre.

PornocracyNow - 2009-06-11

Who's this F3AR cocksucker who onestarred this without even so much as a 'ha ha fuck jappos' statement?!

B. Weed - 2009-06-11

He just bravely rates things now and again, as far as I can tell.

sosage - 2009-06-11

The "duel at the tournament" scene is my favorite part of the movie (aside from his rampage at the end). Going to have to check submissions when this clip falls off the front page.

Keefu - 2009-06-11

I called this an amazing sequence partly because it is awesome and partly because, as someone pointed out on youtube, everything from :37 onwards was done in one shot. Aww yeah.

memedumpster - 2009-06-11

...

mouser - 2009-06-12

Too bad the audio track is boxy. But a damn good film nonetheless. Worth a bazillion black and white stars.
