His name actually was "Norman Slaughter", but the "Tod" came from his distinctive portrayal of Sweeney Todd.

Jay Ward and Bill Scott always said that Slaughter's stock character was the direct inspiration for Snidely Whiplash, and Edward Gorey was a fond fan.
