Let the dial ring for over a minute? I'd have to say I'm glad that didn't become a custom.
It did, until answering machines became common (1980s) and put a stop to it. You have to bear in mind that at the time period this was made people may have only had one phone in the house, and you had to give them time to hear it and get to it. More than one of my older relatives had a little station built into the wall of their main hallway for their telephone, address book, note paper, etc.
