Yerp, that’s my jerb.

For internet car bouncer points - the first car that got filled with water is an Audi or Volkswagen 2.0 liter engine

SolRo - 2023-10-29

Probably an Audi going off of how new and clean those lift arms were

glasseye - 2023-10-29

This channel is great, except for the occasional hoarder car / cockroach infestation.

The Mothership - 2023-10-30

As someone who prides himself on keeping his cars well maintained, this is 100% pure schadenfreude.

Man, mechanics and IP techs have so much in common when dealing with customers.

Yeah, your slow internet speeds may be linked to the fact that half your screen is taken up by browser attachments. I'm pretty sure your system performance is being affected by the thick layer of nicotine-stained dust covering everything. Etc.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2023-10-30

IT. Ugh. I miss having eyes that worked properly.

SolRo - 2023-10-30

People like that are why we charge an hour minimum

Not my problem if you don’t want to read your owners manual

radiosquido - 2023-10-30

This is basically nursing, except the nicotine is on the inside.

SolRo - 2023-10-30

It’s all diagnosis/remedy

jfcaron_ca - 2023-10-30

Customers like this are why responsible folk are assumed-stupid-until-proven-otherwise by mechanics (and IT support as MacGyver mentions above).

SolRo - 2023-10-30

I don’t say that, but I think it really hard

These videos and /r/justrolledintotheshop keep a healthy fear in me when I do my own vehicle work.

I learned how to work on my motorcycle and could do most everything on it by the end: shock installation (front/rear), swing-arm replacement, cam chain, clutch, brake caliper rebuild, master cylinder, valve adjustment, exhaust work, carb rebuild and rejetting, etc.

Took that know-how and applied it to my car, where I've now done: shocks and struts (and spring swap), fuel pump replacement, brake system (caliper replacement, rotors, brakes), tie-rod ends, sway bar links, etc. (Next up: valve timing, rust encapsulator, and perhaps front control arms and inner tie rods!)

If I can't definitively figure out what's going on I take it to a shop for diagnosis and if I can't do the work myself or don't have the proper tools I have them do it.

What I realized was working on cars isn't hard to do-figure out, anyone can do it, but what anyone won't have is the knowledge that professional mechanics have: knowing what to do or what specialized tool to use when something won't come apart or fit into place as expected; knowing the types of problems likely to occur on a given job and how to anticipate them and work through them without breaking shit.

simon666 - 2023-10-30

Maybe "anyone" can't do it, but at least in principle anyone *could* do it!

glasseye - 2023-10-30

Yeah, I enjoy wrenching on my mopeds and motorcycle, but the cars are just too much hassle due to all the specialized tools required and how cheap it is to pay a shop to do everything beyond the most basic of maintenance for me.

Like, I've changed disc and hub brake components on multiple two wheeled vehicles many times, but fuuuuck doing that on a car.

simon666 - 2023-10-30

Yeah I get that. If I owned a different car I probably wouldn't be doing as much work as I do on it. I have an old 4 cylinder Honda where everything is pretty accessible.

But so many newer cars require so much tear down to access what you need to access (or like with many trucks lifting the body off the frame!) it's not worth it.

simon666 - 2023-10-30

Also, I'll say I like doing my own oil and stuff that requires taking the wheels off because at so many oil change/tire shops they'll just over torque your oil filter, drain plug, or lug nuts to all hell. It's nice knowing when I do it everything is to spec.
