MrBuddy Twin Peaks is surealism, the quote "It was like the best dream and the worst nightmare" is used several times in the series. Revolutionary Girl: Utena has a hidden meaning and when you find out what it is, even the silly episodes become heart breaking.

Nikon
This was one of my favorite shows when I was in college. It still has a special place in my heart. It takes the strangeness of school life (ivory tower academia, competing against other students, falling in and out of love) and then twists and exaggerates them using a surreal filter. The backstory of each of the characters was also well done.

Anyone who knows anime knows this series is epic. It starts off as slightly weird but typically shoujo, then slowly begins to rape your mind. Don't judge it by its trappings; it will rock your world.

Triggerbaby Okay, so the majority of folks rating this high seem to have some sort of secret knowledge of parts of this series that don't suck. How about somebody submit a good clip so that we can all appreciate it? Because so far, the evidence before us uninitiated suggests this is bog-standard japoshit.

MongoMcMichael The big problem is, there's not one moment you can point to in the series and say, "Wow, that's just biffed up." It's more of a slow burn: you're initially unsettled by the over-the-top character designs, the weird set-up, and the epic orchestral metal accompanying each sword fight. Then, the series gets more and more deranged as the viewer delves into the characters' psychoses, until the strangeness happening on screen seems merely symptomatic of the storyline's rampant sexual perversion.
Oh yeah, and it's also supposed to dissect fairy tale archetypes at the same time.
So, basically, it's one of those 'you gotta watch it' shows. For the uninitiated, it might look like everything that's wrong about anime, but for those in the know, that's what makes it so right. It's meta-anime.

phalsebob There have been perhaps two watchable anime ever produced. All there rest is nothing but endlessly recycled cliches and trite, shallow style. Often done artlessly. This makes anime unique among artforms. It is consistently shit. Even Rockin' Country enjoys a higher rate of success at not sucking. Anime is the Scientology of arts.
