What happened to this show?

It went from some of the most brilliant television comedy ever in the first two season to unwatchable soap opera around season 3-4.

Different writers? The realization that soap opera drama = ratings?

I don't think it's THAT bad, but it's definitely taken a bit of a dive after it became the Pam and Jim (and Cece!!!) show. And who knows what'll happen after Steve Carell leaves. Toby is still pretty great, though.

Until Jim and Pam got together, the show was built around their non-relationship. After they got together the show needed to start relying on a stronger ensemble cast; call it the "Cheers" syndrome.

The problem is, the ensemble cast peaked in season 3, before Jim and Pam even got together. Everyone's on the decline these days: Jim and Pam have ceased to be particularly interesting, any traces of humanity that were once present in Michael or Dwight are gone, and everyone else in the office is prone to arguing just for the sake of arguing.

Toby is still pretty great, though.

It's the Simpsons effect.
