Toenails Would it be accurate to say that HIV/AIDS brought homosexuality out of the shadows?
Screwtape No it wouldn't. It would be accurate to say that a lot of brave men and women working hard, risking their lives and livelihood brought homosexuality out of the shadows.
I would have thought this video would have been a perfect example of that. Fag.
Xiphias It was the work of the Mattachine Society (1950) and the post-stonewall (1969) activist groups that brought homosexuality out of the shadows, decades before AIDS.
But AIDS was still very significant, obviously. It outed people who had remained in the closet. (Its stigma as a "gay disease" also caused HIV+ positive heterosexuals to be percieved as gay.) It forced the country to talk about sex, including gay sex. It gave homophobes a powerful new angle of attack. And so on.
