Seeing as how the link you just posted is a YouTube video of something that aired on the Discovery Channel, that's probably not what we're talking about, eh?

The issue is the fallibility of RFIDs in credit cards and the like: Can you exploit an RFID to steal someone's identity? Inconclusive.

Will an RFID implanted in your arm cause your entire body to explode because MAGNETS? Apparently not.

kingofthenothing - 2011-02-23
Right on. I should have put more links. The Mythbusters content won't be there but YouTube is great on its own without it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmajlKJlT3U - more hacking the information on the card

- making an RFID zapper from a disposable camera

- something like a cool toy gun type of thing that does the same thing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro11wGKZjps&feature=related - not quite on the same subject - using an implant to unlock a door, kind of cool

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW3RGbQTLhE - a little bit more of what you're looking for

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU79c7kA_eA&feature=related -potentially for car theft

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW17yBn_svE&feature=related - more along the lines of ID theft again

Of course, most of what you'll find is weirdos all stark raving mad over the whole mark of the beast bullshit.

Can someone explain this to me as if I were a child?
I'm stupid.
Anaxagoras - 2011-02-22
Mythbusters wanted to do a show demonstrating the fallibility of RFID chips. In order to be well informed about their topic, they scheduled a meeting with the makers of these chips so the technology could be explained to them. However, instead of receiving technical details about the chips from engineers, the lawyers of various institutions that use the chip attended the meeting. This is because said institutions don't want the fallibility of this device demonstrated, because a large part of their business depends on people ignorantly believing that the businesses are 100% secure.

So the lawyers of said institutions made it absolutely clear that if the RFID chip show was aired, the Discovery channel would lose advertising money from all those major corporations. In addition, it's likely (although it wasn't stated) that they also threatened some sort of legal action against Mythbusters.

this guy and his partner are weird. it's like if you were truely into the whole gay marriage thing why wouldnt you just say all the time that you were gay with your partner even if you weren't married per se. a big problem i have with two gay men engaging in a creative endevour is that you always wonder whether they are gay together. are you guys waiting for some obscure law to change before you can admit that you are a couple? i remember i saw matmos in like 2004 and they were really upfront about the fact that they were gay together. that's a real panacea for shittiness to admit you are just doing some crappy project for the love of another man. this guy is tough because the producers of his news [?} show killed his bit just like i'm tough because i don't have the right to be a racist homophobe idiot while i'm on the job.

Breaking News!

Corporations don't like it when you endanger their bottom line! Conspiracy?! YOU BE THE JUDGE!!!
fourthguy - 2011-02-22
They're actively trying to obfuscate the truth about their product. So while I wouldn't call that a conspiracy or even an uncommon business practice, it is still insidious and depressing

I think Savage and fans forget that Discovery cuts his paychecks. While a bummer, the reality isn't at all surprising.

thebaronsdoctor - 2011-02-23
Adam and Jamie have actually expressed interest in doing a show where they actually test out claims made by advertisers and compare different brands of the the same product to discover which one really is the better buy.

Both of them realize that such an idea would never get off the ground because of this shit.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-02-24
That would actually be valuable television worth watching, which is exactly why it would never succeed. Oh, and the deep pockets of lawyers.

zompus - 2011-02-24
There was, in fact, such a show called "Fight Back With David Horowitz." It aired when I was a kid.

A healthy, independent, fearless free press, in practice and not just in the Bill of Rights, is so important that I don't know how to articulate it.

There's Consumer Reports for product comparisons, but I have no idea how clean they keep their hands over there.

If they think that's scary, try jailbreaking a Playstation 3 and see what Sony does.
